Clinical Reports Carbon Dioxide Embolism Treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen
نویسنده
چکیده
Carbon dioxide embolism is a rare but potentially devastating complication of laparoscopy or hysteroscopy, t' 2 Embolic sequelae include cardiac arrest, pulmonary oedema, and neurological impairment due to anoxia or cerebral embolization. 3' 4 The following is a report of a patient who developed these complications after carbon dioxide insufflation for laparoscopy. The patient's neurological deficits rapidly improved following hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The case emphasizes the therapeutic potential of an increasingly available treatment for cerebral gas emboli.

Hyperbaric treatment of arterial CO2 embolism occuring after laparoscopic surgery: a case report.
Arterial carbon dioxide (CO2) embolism is a serious and sometimes fatal iatrogenic medical condition encountered in surgery. A thirty-five year old Caucasian female developed a CO2 embolism during a laparoscopic appendectomy. After initial resuscitation and completion of the surgery, she was treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) to help reduce the size of large CO2 bubbles that had migrated int...
متن کاملCarbon Dioxide Embolism Following Veress Needle Insertion Into the Liver During Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy
Although rare, complications can arise during the establishment of pneumoperitoneum during laparoscopic surgery. These include injury to blood vessels, hollow viscera, solid organs, and CO2 embolism. We report a case of trauma to the liver following the insertion of a Veress needle causing CO2 embolism during laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Opening pressures on insertion were high. Respiratory and ...
متن کاملHyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Necrosis and Gangrene
Historically, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used for treatment of decompression sickness in deep-sea divers. Today, hyperbaric oxygen is commonly used for the treatment of wide variety of surgical and non-surgical conditions, and has persuasively proved its high clinical efficiency in many areas. Currently, established indications include different bacterial (mostly anaerobic) and fungal i...
متن کاملResuscitation by hyperbaric exposure from a venous gas emboli following laparoscopic surgery
Venous gas embolism is common after laparoscopic surgery but is only rarely of clinical relevance. We present a 52 year old woman undergoing laparoscopic treatment for liver cysts, who also underwent cholecystectomy. She was successfully extubated. However, after a few minutes she developed cardiac arrest due to a venous carbon dioxide (CO2) embolism as identified by transthoracic echocardiogra...
متن کاملApplication of hyperbaric oxygen in liver transplantation
In recent years, hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been used in the treatment of a lot of diseases such as decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, carbon dioxide poisoning, soft tissue infection, refractory osteomyelitis, and problematic wound, but little is known about its application in liver transplantation. Although several studies have been conducted to investigate the protective effects ...
